what is a stillage

what is a stillage

A stillage is a reusable steel storage frame designed to hold, store and move goods as a single load. Unlike a standard pallet, it has an upright structure around the base, helping keep loose, irregular or stacked goods contained during forklift handling and warehouse storage.

The term is used broadly in industrial storage. The exact design can vary depending on what the stillage is expected to hold and how it moves through the site.

More Than a Pallet With Sides

A stillage combines a load-bearing base with a steel frame or mesh structure. Forklift pockets or suitable base supports allow the unit to be picked up and relocated without unloading the goods first.

This becomes useful when materials need to move between receiving, production, staging and storage areas while remaining together as one handling unit.

Why Do Stillages Have Different Designs?

Look at the goods first.

Small components may need a wire mesh stillage to provide containment and visibility. Larger or denser materials may call for a more open steel structure with a reinforced base. The height, mesh arrangement and access opening can also change according to the loading and unloading method.

That is why an industrial stillage is normally specified around the actual material rather than treated as a universal storage frame.

Where Do Stillages Fit in a Warehouse?

Stillages are commonly used where goods are too irregular, loose or difficult to handle efficiently on a flat pallet alone. A forklift can move the loaded unit between different areas without repeatedly rebuilding the load.

They can also be stacked where the base and frame are designed for it, making use of vertical storage space without installing permanent racking for every storage requirement.

What About Galvanised Stillages?

Surface treatment depends largely on the working environment. Galvanised stillages are often selected where the equipment may encounter moisture or where a durable zinc-coated finish is preferred.

For indoor industrial applications, powder-coated mild steel is another common option. The choice should follow the actual storage environment rather than being treated as a standard feature of every stillage.

Stillage Design Is Usually Application-Led

For a manufacturer such as HM Group, designing a stillage starts with practical details: what is being loaded, how it is picked up, where it is stored, whether units are stacked, and how operators access the goods.

So, when someone asks "What is a stillage?", the simplest answer is: a reusable steel load unit that adds containment and vertical structure to material storage and handling. Its value comes from matching that structure to the way goods actually move through the operation.
